Form to letter issue - blank space from drop down in form to letter counts as selection against user wishes

I have created forms to letters that have multiple defaulted options within square brackets to allow for perfect punctuation. The goal is to click "complete selections" and create a perfect letter. The problem is even if I don't select a component from the form - if it has a drop down menu with a blank space - it gets selected in the square bracket option in the letter template. This creates additional punctuation where not needed and requires formatting. This is burdensome for doctor or staff who must review. As the true goal of form to letter is to minimize need for formatting, can Accuro somehow know that a blank space means "no selection".
