I use tasks this way the same as Amy. To make it pop-up, I make it very urgent.

We use tasks in this way. In a Task you can select a date to be reminder and send it to yourself (or other people), so both the physicians and staff can make a reminder for themselves to do things. The task will pop up on the post dated date you selected.
