Ability to use preferred name for searches

Since we can save a preferred name for a patient it would be great if that name could be used when doing a search.  Patients often call using that name but nothing pops up if you try to search with it.

    Although you cannot search by the field for Preferred Name you can search by Alias.

    We recommend adding a patient's preferred name as an Alias instead so that you may search for it. To add an Alias find the blue Alias banner in your Demographics tab. Sometimes it is located in the Other tab.

    Click the Add button to add a new Alias for the selected patient.

    Enter a last name and first name to indicate the patient's preferred name.

    It is optional to chose an Alias Type.

    Press Update Patient after adding an Alias. Now, when searching for patients their Alias shows up in italics.

    From Idea ACC-I-5575:

    The other issue is: "Hi my name is Ian Smith." A search of this Preferred name turns up nothing, and finally after some prolonged questioning, his Legal name is "Walter Smith" which then turns up in the search function. We should be able to have search results that include the Preferred Name which is practically what patients use on a daily basis to avoid troublesome confusion.
